Suggest a Cultural Medallion

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. . .

You are invited to suggest new locations for the HLPC Cultural Medallions Program. Please tell us about existing buildings only, that formerly housed significant individuals or events, and which you think may be worthy of inclusion in the HLPC Cultural Medallions Program.

The Cultural Medallions Program seeks to honor individuals who have made important contributions to New York City in the arts, sciences, the law, business, education, sports and politics. If there is someone whom you consider to be a truly remarkable individual, who has contributed to the diverse heritage of New York City, please write to us (please note, we accept only nominations for individuals who during the course of their lifetime made a genuinely significant contribution).

Once HLPC has carefully verified the location where the individual lived and/or worked, we will attempt to secure the building owner’s agreement to affix one of these handsome terra cotta, black and white medallions to the building facade. If the medallion is to be located in an Historic District, review and approval by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission will be required, also.

The next step is to research and verify the significance of the nominee, before preparation of the text. The text of each Cultural Medallion increasingly provides evocative insight into the distinguished life and work of an the individual, within the complex landscape of NYC. After fabrication of the medallion, HLPC will develop a commemorative program of speakers, to dedicate the medallion, and will provide access to that program through its YouTube channel, part of the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Video Archives at Duke University (click here for more info).

If you know of an existing building, in New York City, where a potential nominee lived, please indicate that information below. And, please share your source for this information, so that we can quickly verify and begin the lengthy process of research and information confirmation. Only then can we start to create a new Cultural Medallion! We will be in touch with you regarding your submission as the process unfolds. Thank you, in advance, for your interest in the HLPC Cultural Medallions Program.

Thank you for your interest in the Historic Landmarks Preservation Center.
